Introduction

About the Professor

  I am Prof. Caroline Moncrief-Vesey.  I have been teaching here at Hogwarts for a few years now. Before coming to work here I was a muggle Biology teacher for about thirteen years. Since then I have taught Herbology, Muggle Studies, History of Magic, Transfiguration, Care of Magical Creatures, and a mess of summer courses.  I have a love for animals as well as children.  My office is crawling with both mundane and magical creatures.  Outside of the school I do have a family.  I like to keep them and work separated for the most part.  I am here to teach you that is all you really need to know.

Class Rules

These have changed please read completely.

Be respectful to me, your classmates, and the animals. Any disrespect from name calling, to talking badly about a house, or kicking an animal all end in detention. Leave house issues outside the classroom. This means if you hate Slytherins or Gryffindors if there is any mention of them in my class spoken or other wise it will be considered disrespecting your classmates and me by bringing it up. We are all dust colored in here. The Animal part is pretty simple you respect them and they will respect you, which means you will be keeping fingers.

If you post arriving late you will lose fifty (50) house points and get a detention. I also post when I start a lesson to not post that you are late but to pretend that you have been there the whole time.  I am giving you a chance to let me not be mean and take points.  It’s that simple.  If you post your first post after I have officially started the lesson please pretend that you have been there the whole time.  If you post you are arriving late you will lose fifty (50) house points.  This is your one and only warning.

All detentions come with you losing fifty (50) house points and in some cases being removed from the class for that lesson.



Please also note that in order to take this class you must be a 3rd year or higher. If you are of a lower year you must have earned a quill in basic Care of Magical Creatures. Thanks.

Syllabus

Introduction - Getting to know the professor and getting to know one another. Covering the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and what it does. Requires THREE posts* to receive full credit.

Lesson 2 - Knarl, Winged Horses and Orthrus Hound along with handling of one or more of the creatures in some sort of task. Required THREE posts* to receive full credit.

Lesson 2 Activity - Must post* at least once (1) in order to receive credit.

Lesson 2 Make Up / Review Class - For those who missed the lesson to make up their posts at half credit** and those who want to earn extra credit.

Lesson 3 - Moke, Kneazle and Niffler will be covered with handling one or more of the creatures with some sort of task. Required THREE posts* to receive full credit.

Lesson 3 Activity - Must post* at least once (1) in order to receive credit.

Lesson 3 Make Up / Review Class - For those who missed the lesson to make up their posts at half credit** and those who want to earn extra credit.

Lesson 4 - Shrake, Streeler and Fire Crab will be covered with handling one or more of the creatures with some sort of task. Required THREE posts* to receive full credit.

Lesson 4 Activity - Must post* at least once (1) in order to receive credit.

Lesson 4 Make Up / Review Class - For those who missed the lesson to make up their posts at half credit* and those who want to earn extra credit.

Lesson 5 - Nogtail, Jarvey and Gnome will be covered with handling one or more of the creatures with some sort of task. Required THREE posts* to receive full credit.

Lesson 5 Activity - Must post* at least once (1) in order to receive credit.

Lesson 5 Make Up / Review Class - For those who missed the lesson to make up their posts at half credit** and those who want to earn extra credit.

**Please note that not all the creatures on the list are from the HP Series and the lessons are subject to change

Grading

  • I will be using the traditional OWL Grading system for this class.

    90-100% O (Outstanding) or 126 points at least

    80-89% E (Exceeds Expectations) or 84 points at least

    70-79% A (Acceptable) or 42 points at least

    60-69% D (Dreadful) or 21 points at least

    0-59% T (Troll) or never show up.


    How the grading works to earn a quill:
    • Each post you make is worth two (2) points.
    • You must post at least three (3) a lesson worth six (6) points.
    • You must post at least once (1) during an activity worth two (2) points.
    • Posting the required amount of times per lessons and activity you will earn forty-two (42) points earning a grade of acceptable thus earning the quill.
    • Must attend every lesson and activity missing a lesson without letting me know will result in you losing six (6) points per lesson and losing two (2) points per activity.
    • The more you post the higher your grade will be.
    • The final is worth twenty (20) points.
    • You must be a 3rd year or higher to take this class
    • If you are a lower year then you must have earned a quill in Basic Care of Magical Creature.
    • If you are going to be gone for any length of time I can give you a make up assignment.  Please note that these make up assignments will be three or more paragraphs in length so they are the same amount of work you would have put into class.
*Posts: I will not accept single line posts. I am putting effort into this I expect a little effort in return. I am asking for a small five to six sentence paragraph per post in order for them to count in full.

**Half Credit: Half credit is just like it says.  The posts you make in the make ups or review sessions are worth one (1) point for each post.  They still have to be the five to six sentences long. I do not have to offer you these chances to make up posts or take the time to have someone review things with you.
